Title: Ofrenda

Year: ca 1920

Technique: watercolour on canvas

Size: 117 x 38,5 cm

This canvas is an unusual work in Xul Solar's production, given the support and its size. It is a painted cotton fabric, with no support, though the limit of the painting is determined by a painted line that runs along three of its sides, except for the upper one.

The cotton tapestry, looks as if it has been made specially as a design to be hanged on the wall and it is related to the designs for buildings' interiors, his architectonic projects of the end of the 1910s, and also his stage sceneries.

The central space of the canvas is run by an image of a tree from its roots to the upper branches; the trunk encloses two figures that symbolically bring out in a clear colour their heart. The heart, house of love, of spirituality, and feelings, is considered also the image of the sun in the man. On its sides heads of mysterious spirits come out, and down to the right a fire purification flame seems to rise towards the figures. The earth tones, are characteristics of some of his works from that period of his production.

He keeps the colour of the back of the canvas, drawing the figures in watercolour and gouache, with firm strokes.

He describes and imaginary landscape, impenetrable, undefined. The two figures offer, as an outstanding element, their heart. The verticality of the tree supposes the way from the subterranean life, up to heaven, becoming the axis between the two worlds.

The artwork as such refers to others performed between 1915 and 1916, like “OFrenda Cuori” and “Man Tree”.
