Sin embargo, tanto el tipo de papel pegado, la forma de ocultar parcialmente en él lo que se encuentra debajo, el lugar donde se ubica la inscripción llevan a pensar que se trata de algo bastante anterior en el tiempo a la fecha propuesta para la obra. Primero porque el título Plaza rufa, nada tiene que ver con la iconografía y la paleta del óleo; segundo, la descripción realizada, lleva inmediatamente al reverso de Drama teatri (Cat. 726) que presenta las mismas características. Es probable, entonces, que Xul haya reutilizado un cartón empleado previamente para una obra realizada hacia 1929-1932, luego desestimada por él, pero a la que corresponde el título inscripto. Por último y en relación con el óleo, este debe haber sido recortado por el artista por el lateral derecho, dado que al compararlo con la primera idea para la obra (CA-46), se observa que aparece una figura humana que tiene la altura de las tres cabezas a su izquierda.
