Incluimos aquí un conjunto de litografías coloreadas
a mano con acuarela por el artista las que constituyen
una excepción en su producción y por eso hemos
decidido no organizar un capítulo aparte destinado
a grabado, ya que el conjunto en sí es pequeño en
tanto presenta solo dos motivos y diferentes pruebas
de estado. En relación con su datación, solo tres de
estas litografías se encuentran datadas en 1921, pero
es evidente que deben distinguirse dos momentos
de ejecución distintos. Al respecto, 1920 debe haber
sido el año en el que el artista encontrándose en
Milán y a través de su amigo Pettoruti tuvo acceso a
la prensa que fuera de Umberto Boccioni, adquirida
por el pintor platense luego de su fallecimiento. Por
este artista sabemos que durante 1920 él mismo hizo
grabados de tiraje reducido empleándola; para ese
entonces con varias estancias en Milán, Xul estuvo
particularmente cercano a Pettoruti y ese debe haber
sido el momento en que realizó estas litografías y las
distintas pruebas de estado que conocemos hoy. El
segundo momento debe haber sido aquel en el que
se decidió a colorearlas, que por su datación fue en
1921, por lo menos a este subgrupo que se relaciona
directamente con su pintura Penitentes, la que constituyó
su punto de partida, lo que se comprueba al
comparar una y otras, donde en el caso de las litografías
la imagen aparece invertida. Por último, este
interés también lo relaciona con las xilografías coloreadas
a mano con acuarela realizadas por su amigo
Achille Lega, de las que Xul conservó dos.

En el caso de esta obra, debe haber sido identificada
al mismo momento que Sin título (Cat. 360), ya que
las inscripciones que presenta en el reverso, referidas
a sus datos técnicos pertenecen a la misma mano y
seguramente fue entonces cuando se le asignó el título
de Plantas. Asimismo, resulta evidente que la pintura
fue posdatada ya que tanto por la técnica como
por el soporte y sus medidas, se relaciona con el conjunto
de óleos realizados a partir de 1918, además de
que Auxilio, que es la pintura que se relaciona directamente
con ella ya que se trata de una versión de la
misma obra solo que realizada a la acuarela, aparece
datada en 1921. Véase Notas a Umbra.

Notas
Umbra aparece mencionada en la documentación
indicada aquí sólo en dos oportunidades; la primera
de ellas indica “+ - 1930 Umbra (16)” –[Exposiciones
1920-1951], p. 201– y en el segundo documento
–“Muestras póstumas”, p. 55– se indica el año 1929
como fecha de ejecución. De estas aclaraciones se
deduce que no existía una datación cierta para la
obra y que probablemente dicha datación se le asignó
a fines de la década de 1970. De la consideración
de la pintura desde el punto de vista estilístico, su
técnica y soporte, se desprende que ella se relaciona
con el conjunto de óleos realizados a partir de 1918.
Por otra parte, para la nueva propuesta de datación
también nos guiamos por el tratamiento de la figura
que en su representación se encuentra muy próxima
a Faunos (Cat. 433), efectivamente datada por el artista
en 1921.
Asimismo, la inscripción “UMBRA”, de la que se tomó
el título, que significa “sombra”, además del tema
representado –un hombre en un paisaje y la sombra
que él proyecta en el espacio– permiten proponer
que esta pintura es aquella que con el título Ome i su
sombra fue expuesta en Amigos del Arte en su primera
exposición individual en el país en 1929.
