Por su correspondencia con Emilio Pettoruti sabemos
que durante el mes de noviembre de 1918, este
le envió algunos colores al óleo, entre ellos minio. En
este punto, Xul es explícito acerca del impacto que
este color le provocó: “¡Cuántas bendiciones le eché,
como pocas veces habrá recibido en su vida, á causa
del minio ke me mandó, su brillo su vivacidad me han
movido más ke una gran fiesta; creo ke por esta pekeñez
muchas buenas cosas haré. Cierto ke lo conocía
desde chico, pero nunca lo empleé./ Me hizo pintar
impromptus, sin lógica, solo por usarlo, i así me entré
en pintura á oleo i espero ke segiré, si me dura la
embriagez, ke tal fué. Los otros colores también le
agradezco” [noviembre de 1918?].

Observaciones
No hay registro fotográfico del reverso de la obra pero
es probable que en él se encuentre una inscripción
con el número de inventario de la Fundación Pan
Klub, de la mano de MRC. Por otra parte, al ser ingresada
a dicho inventario en 1990, la obra aparecía
sin título, por lo que Ritmos es un título atribuido con
posterioridad entre 1996 y 1997.
Al salir en la subasta en Sotheby’s en 2013, en el catálogo
se indicó que la pintura posee una foto-certificado
de autenticidad otorgado por Natalio Jorge
Povarché.

En su reverso, el cartón presenta manchas de pintura
provocadas por la limpieza del pincel sobre él y en su
margen superior izquierdo hay un faltante, como si
una parte del mismo hubiese sido arrancada al despegar
una etiqueta u otro material engomado, provocando
el desprendimiento de una capa del cartón y la
consecuente pérdida de parte la inscripción realizada
por MCSS.

Notas
Tireuse de cartes, puede ser entendida como una copia de Les joueuses de cartes de Pierre Bonnard. Sin embargo, no se trata simplemente de una copia; de por sí, el cambio del título producido obedece a una razón: en la pintura del francés son dos las figuras las que aparecen, mientras que en su versión Xul elimina la segunda mujer a la izquierda que aparece casi en segundo plano. Esto determina que se produzca el cambio de una pintura de formato apaisado a una de formato vertical.
Xul sigue con esta obra la práctica tradicional de los artistas que en la realización de copias se encontraba un método de aprendizaje, y en su caso se trataba de dominar una técnica (el óleo) con la que no estaba totalmente familiarizado. Pero lo
que es más importante es el porqué de su elección de Les joueuses: en la figura de Bonnard la mujer lleva colgando de su cuello un corbatín de color minio, que a simple vista y dada su pregnancia domina sobre una paleta de tonalidad media, pero que además organiza en torno suyo todo el esquema cromático. Lo que Xul se propuso con su copia fue analizar el comportamiento del minio en su relación con el azul, el blanco y el bordeaux. Solo conociendo esta Tireuse de cartes es posible comprender Fiamma nelle zone (Cat. 196), en la que -
de la misma manera en que Pettoruti lo había hecho previamente en su práctica pictórica- define y emplea el mismo mapa cromático de Les joueuses, y el resultado es una pintura que, a pesar de su título, es abstracta.
