Observaciones La pintura no fue datada por el artista y todos los registros llevados por su viuda indican 1920 como año de ejecución. La representación del agua -una franja de color con el borde superior ondulado que representa al agua- constituye un elemento iconográfico residual en tanto se lo identifica en pinturas realizadas entre 1922 y 1923. Sin embargo, en la obra aparecen ciertos elementos iconográficos que permiten proponer como fecha de ejecución el año 1924: se trata del empleo de unas líneas que a manera de cinturón aparecen en el personaje principal y que delinean tres cruces o tres equis. Este elemento solo aparece a partir de 1924 en pinturas como Místicos, Casa colonial o Despareja. Asimismo, la representación de una figura con forma de estrella (en realidad un pentagrama esotérico) que Xul comenzó a utilizar en 1924 pero de manera sistemática recién a partir de 1925. Notas Durante la exposición dedicada al artista en 1984 por Galería Rubbers, Caty Todres presentó un tapiz de 95 x 125 cm realizado a partir de Una pareja. Al respecto, Ruth Corcuera establece un vínculo directo entre este tapiz (reproducido en p. 291) y la obra de Xul. Aun cuando hay varias pinturas de fines de la década de 1910, que tienen por título Tapiz y que el empleo del recurso de dividir en bandas horizontales la pintura pudiera relacionarse con los principios de esa técnica, lo único que es posible suponer es que fue la Galería la que actuó como comitente de Todres para la realización del mismo y que, en consecuencia, no existe vínculo directo entre la pintura de Xul y lo realizado por esta artista. Notas Una drola, ha sido datada siempre en 1923, sin embargo, no hay inscripciones del artista que así lo indiquen y lo cierto es que estilísticamente se encuentra muy próxima a otras pinturas de 1924, como Despareja, Casa colonial, Místicos, Una pareja o Dos parejas. Con ellas, al igual que con De Egipto, comparte el empleo de un recurso plástico que divide el plano en bandas horizontales. Presenta, además, una particularidad que hasta donde sabemos es única: se trata del papel en el que fue realizada. En el AD-FPK se conserva el block fabricado por Franz Dury de Munich, en la medida 30 x 24 cm que se caracteriza por un poseer un gramaje mayor y por tener una superficie muy texturada. Estas características le dan una cualidad única a la acuarela que difícilmente puede ser captada por su reproducción por medios fotomecánicos o digitales. Observaciones Dado que la pintura se encuentra enmarcada, las inscripciones señaladas en su reverso, son aquellas que hemos podido documentar a través del registro fotográfico –negativo digitalizado n. 1669, AD-FPK– de Cuatro mestizos de avión y ciudad en el que se observa a esta última apoyada sobre el reverso de Una drola. En las dos subastas referenciadas se indicó que la obra era acompañada por un certificado de autenticidad: en 1990 otorgado por el Museo Xul Solar y, en 2008 por la Fundación Pan Klub con la firma de Natalio J. Notas La obra es solo conocida por la reproducción en el Magazine de La Nación, por eso no ha sido posible verificar sus medidas; para su datación nos guiamos por ciertos elementos reconocibles en su iconografía, como el símbolo de Marte, las cruces que se despliegan a lo largo de la serpiente –presentes en Algo marcial (Cat. 613)–, y la disposición en el plano de la serpiente que aparece, por ejemplo, en Ña diáfana (Cat. 568) o en Jefe de sierpes (Cat. 569). En el ejemplar del Magazine conservado en el AD-FPK Xul intervino la reproducción empleando lápiz negro para resaltar aquellas partes no visibles en la fotografía y en los laterales, indicado con abreviaturas, lo que pueden ser los colores de la obra.
