Notas Hasta el momento, el único registro conocido de A Meudon es la fotografía aquí reproducida y la información que poseemos acerca de ella se desprende de documentos de la década de 1990 existentes en el AD-FPK. La pintura ha sido datada a partir de Al Lussemburgo y Con serre, ya que tanto estilísticamente como por la técnica y el soporte utilizados se encuentra estrechamente relacionada con ellas. En relación con su título, A Meudon, hemos optado por mantener aquel con el que ha sido conocida desde principios de los años noventa–, descartando aquel con el que aparece en el catálogo de la exposición mencionada –A Mendon– entendiendo que se puede tratar de un error de imprenta; esto último teniendo en cuenta además que Meudon es una localidad que se encuentra muy cerca de París donde Xul pintó Al Lussemburgo y Con serre y se destaca por sus bosques y floresta (motivo de la obra), mientras que Locoal-Mendon se encuentra en Britania a unos 400 km de la capital francesa y presenta otro tipo de vegetación. Observaciones La inscripción en el frente, apenas visible en el registro fotográfico histórico de la obra, con el número “69”, indica el número correspondiente a ella en el catálogo de la exposición en Milán. Por otra parte, es probable que en su reverso la pintura presente inscripciones sea del mismo Xul o de un tercero, además del número de inventario de la FPK, de la mano de Martha Rastelli de Caprotti. A pesar del estallido de la Gran Guerra en 1914 y hasta su finalización en 1918, aun manteniendo su residencia en San Pietro in Rovereto (Zoagli), Xul realizó viajes a París, Florencia y Milán. Su producción, por lo menos la que hemos podido documentar para este período, es en términos cuantitativos menor; sin embargo, entre las piezas conocidas se ubican algunas de las más importantes. Aunque el paisaje sigue ocupando un lugar destacado, aparece también en sus pinturas una nueva iconografía, ahora con un marcado acento espiritual y religioso. Notas Existen otras tres versiones de Entierro además de esta; en la documentación de referencia histórica -[Exposiciones 1920-1951], p. 200- la identificada como Cat. 34, aparece la indicación “marzo 1914”. Es con esta versión con la que la obra catalogada aquí se encuentra más próxima, lo que permite proponer como año de ejecución 1914. Es probable que, dado su estado de conservación, Xul la haya de alguna manera desestimado en fecha bastante temprana y que en realidad esta sea la obra que abre el conjunto de cuatro pinturas que presentan el mismo tema. En particular porque si bien hay pequeñas diferencias entre todas, esta tiene un mayor desarrollo tanto por su parte inferior como superior: en el caso de las otras tres obras, como consecuencia de esta reducción, se produce un mayor acercamiento del espectador al espacio donde se desarrolla la escena central.
