Notas Eva Spiro Métraux (Lausanne, 1903- ?) fue la primera esposa de Alfred Métraux y residió en la Argentina durante los años en que el antropólogo vivió en el país, retornando a Suiza a fines de 1932. Mantuvo con Xul una estrecha amistad que quedó documentada en su correspondencia con el artista. En ella, a poco de haber partido de Buenos Aires a fines de 1932, y a bordo del Duilio, le escribía: “J’ai déballé ton petit tableau et je l’ai suspendu dans ma cabine pour fixer ta présence à quelque chose de tangible. Je crois que je l’aimerai beaucoup. Je me raconte des histoires à propos des bons hommes qui l’habitent. La tête de femme éplorée que tu m’as dit être ton amie, ne me plait pas trop. Si elle continue, il faudra que je finisse pour lui coller dessus un timbre-poste. J’aimerai autant n’en pas arriver à cette extrémité.” Y luego en otras dos cartas hacía mención a la obra por su título, Rua nochi. Los datos aportados en esta correspondencia son los que han permitido identificar la pintura y atribuirla a Xul Solar. Observaciones Entre 2003 y 2004 un coleccionista localizado en Suiza se contactó con Natalio J. Povarché enviando una transparencia y fotografías tomadas en distintos momentos de esta obra, indicando sus medidas e inscripciones en el reverso. Esa documentación fue enviada a fines de 2007 al AD-FPK, sin que hasta ese momento se hubiese establecido la relación entre la pintura y Eva Métraux. Notas La obra solo es conocida por su reproducción en el diario La Razón, una reproducción de pequeño tamaño y mala calidad. La mayor información sobre ella se encuentra, sin embargo, en el estudio realizado en una página suelta con apuntes en la que se puede observar aquello que es el sustrato de la pintura pero que ella no muestra: el estudio realizado para hacer el horóscopo partiendo de la posición de los planetas y el sol en relación con los signos zodiacales. Observaciones La firma es apenas visible en la reproducción pero el recorte periodístico, al igual que en los datos aportados en la subasta, indica que la pintura estaba además de firmada (“Xul”), fechada (“1927”). Asimismo, al momento de ser subastada se transcribió la inscripción en el reverso de la mano de la viuda de Xul. Observaciones El título de la pintura ha sido retrotraído a aquel con el que aparece en los documentos de referencia histórica. Esto se debe a que Esfinge con admirues tiene coherencia con su iconografía que presenta figuras que se distribuyen alrededor de la esfinge, adorándola (“admi” de admiradores, “rues” forma plural inventada por Xul de la voz rua en portugués). El título fue modificado probablemente a mediados de la década de 1990 al ser ingresada al inventario de la FPK, cambio que debe entenderse como un error involuntario.
