Notas Xul puso gran empeño en la organización de su exposición en 1949 en Galería Samos, recientemente inaugurada por Alfredo Bonino: publicó por segunda vez un catálogo ilustrado, acompañado por un prólogo de Jorge L. Borges y se ocupó de su difusión sobre todo en la revista Continente. Sin embargo, a pesar de todo el esfuerzo, solo vendió una obra, la aquí catalogada, al editor Gonzalo Losada, fundador de Editorial Losada en la suma de $ 700. Tanto la muestra en Samos como esta adquisición remiten a la figura de Emilio Pettoruti quien había expuesto en la misma galería poco antes y que tenía estrecha relación con Losada por su participación en el Taller Altamira que fue sostenido económicamente por el editor. No obstante esto, es probable que el mismo Losada haya asistido hacia 1940 a los cursos de astrología que dictaba Xul en su casa, según se desprende de un documento recientemente localizado en el AD-FPK. Desde su exposición en 1949, la pintura no volvió a ser expuesta y es probable que siguiese en manos de Losada por lo menos hasta su fallecimiento en 1981. Observaciones En el reverso del enmarcado actual de la obra: dos etiquetas pegadas, ambas de Marie-Anne Fine Art de Nueva York. La primera de ellas con la ficha técnica de la obra y, la segunda, una etiqueta inventario con el número “36”. En las tres ocasiones en que la obra salió a subasta, se indicó que era acompañada por una foto-certificado firmado por Natalio Jorge Povarché. La identificación para la historia de su procedencia, se deriva de otro documento –[Documentos relativos a exposiciones, venta de obras, coleccionistas], n. [054]– donde se indican los nombres de Rebeca (1903-1986) y Esther Lidia Gerschman (?-1996). Aunque en él no se indica la fecha, es probable que Lita lo haya regalado durante la década de 1970 porque es aproximadamente cuando elaboró el listado al que refiere ese documento. Por otra parte, ignoramos en qué momento la obra perdió su título original, Un muro tras otro frente a Montiondas con cruz. Lo que permitió recuperarlo fue la diapositiva conservada (caja V, n. 60) y las otras anotaciones de Lita, indicando la inscripción del artista “4” que aparece en la obra –[Documentos 1920-1951], p. 10–, no quedando dudas acerca de su identificación. Observaciones Para la exposición realizada en la galería Guión no se publicó catálogo; la información que poseemos en relación con las obras expuestas (en total veinticuatro) y la fecha de su realización (aproximadamente entre el 3 y el 15 de septiembre de 1951) se desprende de un único documento, [Exposiciones 1920-1951]. Observaciones En su reverso, el papel presenta dos momentos de intervención distintos: el primero, el dibujo al lápiz de unas cabezas y figuras, y luego, el trabajo con acuarela sobre lo que representa una frondosa vegetación. En principio podría decirse que esto es previo a la ejecución de la tinta debido a que el papel presenta dos bordes laterales irregulares; probablemente se trata de algo que el artista desestimó y volvió a utilizar el papel en su reverso, una práctica bastante habitual en él. Observaciones Al igual que el resto de las obras que participaron de la exposición en Riobóo, es probable que en su reverso esta pintura tuviese una etiqueta de la galería consignando sus datos técnicos, el número correspondiente en el catálogo y fecha de exposición. Véase Inscripciones de terceros para Lao Tsé, (Cat. 1286). La obra se encontraba seguramente en la sala de la casa de Xul Solar, donde hacia 1964-1965 se produjo un incendio que afectó también otras dos obras, Templos (Cat. 852) y Pegasos (Cat. 938), además de la biblioteca del artista. Tanto Contrapunto de montes con Yara como Templos fueron luego restauradas en 2000 y existen registros fotográficos que muestran el estado en que se encontraban ambas pinturas previo a su restauración. En el caso de esta obra, sus medidas –tal como las registra el catálogo online del Reina Sofía, 33,7 x 48,3 cm– difieren de aquellas consignadas en el catálogo de la exposición en Samos, 35 x 50 cm, como así también de las indicadas en el catálogo de Riobóo, 34,5 x 49,5 cm. En el último caso, probablemente las medidas hayan sido tomadas con la obra ya enmarcada por eso la diferencia de 0,5 cm por lado en relación con las medidas indicadas en 1949.
