El catálogo de la muestra en París (diciembre de
1963), lleva una biografía seguramente proporcionada
por el mismo artista para esa ocasión, ya que
la exposición se inauguró el mismo mes en que él
falleció (diciembre). La obra presenta un marco de
madera pintado con un contramarco también en madera
pintado, realizado por Xul y que será común en
sus características materiales a los empleados para
su exposición en la Sala V de Van Riel, en las pinturas
al óleo sobre vidrio. El soporte elegido para su pintura
–tablero de aglomerado de madera sin cubrir– y
la técnica elegida, óleo, marcan una posible investigación
acerca del empleo del óleo sobre nuevos soportes
(el aglomerado es un producto de un proceso
industrial cuyo uso se extendió luego de la II Guerra
Mundial), en la búsqueda de diferentes efectos a nivel
de la textura.
Observaciones

A partir de su exposición en la Galería Klemm en 1994,
la obra pasó a ser identificada como Rochers, uno de
los títulos inscripto en su reverso. En la actualidad
ella conserva el marco de madera original al que se le
ha sumado un marco moldurado tradicional; el registro
fotográfico reproducido aquí muestra a la pintura
en su estado actual.

Observaciones
El papel sobre el que está realizada la pintura presenta
dos recortes en el lateral derecho que resultan apenas
visibles. Se trata de una práctica no muy habitual
en Xul en la que frente a un problema en la pintura
o que algo no le resultase satisfactorio en cualquier
sentido, opta no por desestimar la obra sino recortar
el papel y pegar otro para realizar el cambio o la
corrección deseada. Esto tiene que ver con la técnica
húmeda empleada que a diferencia del óleo no permite
arrepentimientos y no da lugar a correcciones.

El título de la obra refiere a otra pintura, Coro, realizada
en 1949, con la que comparte el tema y su iconografía:
un grupo de figuras cuyas cabezas resplandecen
aureoladas y que muestran sus brazos extendidos
en alto a los lados del cuerpo.
Observaciones
En el ángulo inferior derecho del reverso, la obra presenta
un listado de cinco palabras en francés (dos
de ellas ilegibles, las restantes “gêner”, “[r]êvasser”
y “bouder”) escrito por Xul Solar que aparece recortado
por el lateral que no parece tener relación con
la pintura; presenta además una inscripción en lápiz
ilegible.

La obra que aparece en el reverso de Mas upa, aunque
presenta un estado avanzado de ejecución se
encuentra inacabada y fue también desestimada por
el artista al ocultarla tras un acuarelado oscuro. Para
su datación empleamos como referencia otra pintura,

Nota
A partir de 1950 y hasta su fallecimiento Xul realizó
sus Pan tree, que conviven con el resto de su producción.
Entre obras acabadas, estudios y obras inacabadas
se trata de un conjunto de más de 100 piezas.
A pesar de los distintos grados de acabado indicados,
la mayoría de ellas fueron firmadas y datadas por el
artista –lo que dificulta entender cuál es su estatus
en tanto obra y/o estudio–, siendo la fecha de realización
una clave para él. Este Árbol de la Vida se funda
en la tradición esotérica occidental y en muchos casos
incorpora a Daath, tomado de la Golden Dawn.
Según la tradición se trata de un proceso de conocimiento
elevándose a través de distintos planos hasta
llegar al conocimiento superior. En el caso de Xul, su
insistencia en su realización tal vez se deba a que su
Pan tree no solo indica un camino de elevación sino
que, además y dentro de la tradición ocultista indicada,
encierra probablemente fórmulas mágicas.

Observaciones
El 3 de septiembre de 1951 Xul inauguró su exposición
en la galería Guión, ubicada en la calle Tucumán
717, para la que realizó este cartel. En esa oportunidad
expuso veinticuatro pinturas, en su mayoría realizadas
durante 1949 y solo seis durante 1950 y 1951;
no realizó catálogo por lo que la información que poseemos
se deriva de documentos de época.

Notas
La obra es solo conocida por su reproducción en el
programa de la Sociedad Argentina de Escritores
(SADE) referenciado en la Bibliografía, por eso no ha
sido posible verificar ni sus medidas ni su técnica. En
un recorte de la reproducción de la obra, conservado
en el AD-FPK, Xul intervino sobre él empleando gouache
para resaltar algunos sectores; en los laterales del
recorte se pueden observar pequeñas perforaciones
que indican que seguramente lo tenía a la vista, colgado
de una pared.
Dado que en la publicación se indica debajo de la
reproducción “Xul Solar: dibujo”, es posible suponer
que la obra responde en cuanto a técnica a la acuarela,
esto debido a que en las obras de este período
Xul hablaba de “dibujo” al referirse a una pintura que
estaba trabajada principalmente con este medio húmedo
o con témpera, limitando el empleo del color
y solo utilizando el negro y gouache para el blanco.
Por debajo de la reproducción de la obra, se puede
leer lo que es una explicación de su significado, proporcionada
por el artista: “0) Caos - 1) Físico y Etérico
- 2) Anímico (Lírico) - 3) Mental, Ego (ángel guardián)
- 4) Razón pura - 5) Mundo espiritual (y mónada) - 6)
Mundo divino”.

Notas
El único registro conocido de esta obra era aquel reproducido
en la revista El Hogar. Según lo que indicado
por Micaela Cadenas –[Exposiciones 1920-1951]–,
la obra fue regalada a Julio César Dubini, aunque no
informa fecha alguna. Asimismo, en ese documento
(p. 206) además de informar sus medidas, aclara
que tenía marco, lo que debe significar que tenía un
marco realizado por el artista; en la página 63 del
mismo documento, señala que fue expuesta en Van
Riel fuera de catálogo, esta fue la única vez en que fue
exhibida.
Observaciones
La obra cuenta con una foto-certificado de autenticidad
firmado por Natalio J. Porvarché, y una copia del
mismo se conserva en el AD-FPK.
