La grafía, es una tinta sobre papel que ignoramos si se ha conservado; ella traduce a
su sistema de escritura el título del libro y fue especialmente realizada por Xul para
Romilio Ribero (Capilla del Monte, 1933-Córdoba, 1974). Al igual que las grafías de
este período, está firmada (“X”) y datada en 1962.
En 1965 Ribero participó de la exposición Magia e imaginación en la pintura (Galería
Dédalo), en la que también estuvo representado Xul organizada por Osvaldo Svanascini.
Es probable, entonces, que el contacto de Xul con el artista-escritor fuese a
través del crítico. No es mucho más lo que sabemos de la relación entablada entre
ambos.
Observaciones
En el AD-FPK se conservan dos ejemplares del libro de Romilio Ribero, uno de ellos
dedicado por su autor a Lita: “Compañera inmortal del maravilloso/ Xul, con eterno
agradecimiento y amistad/ Romilio Ribero/ Bs. As. 27/8/63”.

Las viñetas que ilustraron Un modelo para la muerte (Cat. 1521) fueron atribuidas a
Xul Solar por Emir Rodríguez Monegal (1978), especialista en Borges y muy cercano
en amistad al escritor. Del conjunto de siete viñetas, seis de ellas fueron reproducidas
años después en el Manual de zoología fantástica. En este punto, fue Annick
Louis (1998) quien estudió las correspondencias existentes en uno y otro libro. El
origen de estas ilustraciones es complejo pues en el Manual se incorporaron además otras nueve muy próximas en su estilo y en su fuente iconográfica, lo que hace
que entre ambos libros se puedan contabilizar un total de dieciséis viñetas relacionadas
entre sí y atribuibles a Xul.
Dado que no existe referencia a este trabajo del artista en el AD-FPK y ni siquiera
esos libros se encuentran en su biblioteca personal, lo que podemos afirmar es
que: 1) ignoramos la razón por la cual Borges y Bioy Casares incluyeron las viñetas
de Xul en Un modelo para la muerte en tanto su fuente iconográfica se encuentra
en la literatura china y no guarda relación directa con él; 2) que hacia comienzos
de la década de 1940 es probable que Borges y Xul hubiesen estado pensando en
un libro ilustrado dedicado a “seres imaginarios”, en principio centrado en fuentes
clásicas de la literatura china, lo que estaría acorde con los intereses compartidos
por ambos y explicitados en distintos momentos por el mismo escritor: los cuentos
de hadas; 3) es el Manual de zoología fantástica el que permite reconstruir, por lo
menos parcialmente, el origen de las ilustraciones. En principio, las viñetas incluidas
en él se relacionan directamente con el capítulo “Fauna china” (p. 72-73), y se
distribuyen a lo largo del libro aunque sin un orden reconocible, ya que el libro si
bien tiene otros capítulos dedicados a otros seres como el zorro, el dragón o el fénix
chinos, las viñetas no refieren a ellos y sí, en casi todos los casos, a cada uno de los
pequeños párrafos descriptivos incluidos en “Fauna china”; 4) la clave de lectura
para las viñetas y para conocer su procedencia se encuentra en la p. 66 donde se
reproduce una lámina entera que presenta inserto en un paisaje uno de los seres
(el hsing-t’ien) que luego aparece reproducido en la viñeta de la p. 135. La lámina
en cuestión fue probablemente extraída del libro de Gerald Willoughby-Meade,
Chinese ghouls and goblins y de esa lámina se partió para la viñeta. En la misma
situación se encuentran las viñetas de las p. 41 y 156, es decir que además del proceso
extractivo descripto previamente se reconoce otro que lleva a la apropiación
e intervención sobre imágenes ajenas. Un proceso complejo pues las imágenes de
Willoughby-Meade provienen según lo indica su autor de las enciclopedias T’u shu
chi ch’ên y de San ts’ai t’u hui. Además de aquellas relacionadas con Chinese ghouls,
hemos podido identificar dos más que tienen su origen en San ts’ai t’u hui, aunque
no están incluidas en el libro de Willoughby-Meade y que tal vez se encuentren en
otra enciclopedia ilustrada. Borges indica como fuente para “Fauna china” la enciclopedia
T’ai p’ing kuang chi.

La única y extensa mención que conocemos acerca del Taller de encuadernación
“Legrain” es el artículo de Jorge Romero Brest (1940), en el que se ocupa de la exposición
de arte decorativo organizada por dicho taller, y además de la mención de
otros participantes, incluye entre ellos a Norah Borges y a Xul. La tarjeta de invitación
a esa exposición, y el ejemplar aquí catalogado, junto al texto de Romero Brest,
son los únicos elementos que permiten reconstruir el contexto de realización de
la encuadernación. Por otra parte, el crítico de arte menciona a “Marta Beimes de
Collazo” como quien tenía a su cargo el taller. En realidad se trata de Marta Beines
(Buenos Aires, 1908-1989?), la famosa ecónoma y periodista de gastronomía, autora
de El gran libro de cocina publicado en 1953 con prefacio de Miguel Ángel Asturias.
Beines pertenecía desde joven al círculo de amistades en las que se movía Xul, y
debe haberse iniciado rápidamente en la especialidad de encuadernaciones artísticas,
una actividad que sostuvo por lo menos hasta mediados de la década de 1950,
tal como lo confirma el testimonio de Juan Gullin. La amistad entre Beines y Xul es
la que también permite explicar la existencia de los dos ejemplares de Verve encuadernados
que pertenecieron a su colección y que Xul realizó en el mismo contexto.

Notas
En la Biblioteca de Xul Solar se conservan los dos volúmenes (Libros I y II, Libro III)
de I Ging. Das Buch der Wandlungen. Ambos presentan las páginas de guarda y los
bordes superior y delantero pintados en azul por el artista. Pero solo el ejemplar
correspondiente a los Libros I y II recibió una ilustración a la acuarela en el cierre del
índice que se extiende a la hoja de cortesía. Por otra parte, el incendio que se produjo
en 1965 en la sala de la casa de Xul, donde se encontraba una de sus bibliotecas
dañó seriamente el Libro III. Para la propuesta de datación de la intervención de Xul
partimos del ejemplar de El idioma de los argentinos catalogado aquí, en tanto se
relacionan estilísticamente, en particular por el cuidado puesto por el artista en la
ornamentación de las páginas que corresponden al índice de contenido.

Notas
En la página referenciada con los dibujos al lápiz para las viñetas, Xul dibujó una
gran cantidad de motivos aunque sólo numeró 45. El papel empleado fue intervenido
en ambas caras y en él se puede observar que realizó un principio de selección
marcando cuatro dibujos con lápiz de color azul, aunque de ese pequeño grupo
solo dos pasaron al libro. Asimismo, algunos de estos dibujos fueron firmados “Xul”,
algo que en la versión definitiva no hizo.
Su trabajo estuvo destinado a personalizar un ejemplar que Borges quería regalar,
lo que no se concretó ya que este quedó en manos de Xul. El ejemplar, como lo
indica la práctica en bibliofilia, conservó las cubiertas impresas y el lomo y recibió
una cubierta en pergamino que fue pintada con óleo muy diluido. En su interior,
además de pintar las viñetas impresas, destacó con acuarela y con diferentes niveles
de intervención, la portadilla, la portada, las páginas con obras del autor y lema,
el prólogo y cuatro aperturas de capítulo, para finalizar en la página del índice. Esta
fue, además, la primera vez que empleó páginas de guarda pintadas a la acuarela,
una práctica que luego aplicaría a otros libros y revistas aquí catalogados.

Notas
El tamaño de mi esperanza señala el momento de afirmación de la amistad entre
Borges y Xul. En él existen dos marcas que así lo indican: en primer lugar, el ensayo
“El idioma infinito” (1925) que Borges cierra afirmando “Estos apuntes se los dedico
al gran Xul-Solar, ya que en la ideación de ellos no está libre de culpa”, se trata de la
primera mención al artista documentada. Luego, la incorporación como ilustración
de página de cinco de sus viñetas. Finalmente, el ejemplar dedicado por el autor
al artista: “A Xul-Solar, colaborador de estas esperanzas-/ agradecidamente/ Jorge
Luis” (Colección Fundación San Telmo).
