En el caso catalogado aquí el motivo iconográfico del ojo de Dios aparece independizado; se trata de un simbolismo complejo que excede aquello que se puede identificar como su fuente (Salmos 33:18), en tanto suma un triángulo invertido e inserta en él una cruz. Para pensar ese movimiento extractivo y que el objeto mantenga su coherencia se puede mencionar que dentro de la Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.), el lamen con el ojo de Dios simboliza las tres Sephirot superiores del Árbol de la Vida: Kether, Chokmah y Binah. Notas Según el testimonio recogido por Gregory Sheerwood en 1951, Xul se encontraba trabajando en una nueva lengua artificial, la “panlingua”, que para su creador no solo era muy sencilla sino que tenía una “grafía parecida a la esteno o taquigrafía”. Esta afirmación es precisamente la que pone en duda que se trate de la panlengua que se encuentra en la base de los juegos de cartas catalogados aquí. Recién dos años después, ahora en una entrevista con Foglia, Xul le informaba que en ese momento –decía “actualmente”– se encontraba trabajando en una lengua que era monosilábica, sin gramática, “de raíces básicas, unívocas e invariables”. Y adelantaba que el “diccionario de esta lengua, que propondré en su oportunidad, es el tablero del panajedrez”. Es probable entonces que ya a fines de la década de 1950 la panlengua haya alcanzado un alto grado de desarrollo y que este quede evidenciado en sus juegos de cartas. Sin embargo, hasta el presente no hay estudios que aclaren los aspectos que definen esa lengua a priori, y la mayor información que poseemos sobre ella es la proporcionada por Borges en una de sus conferencias dedicada al artista. Observaciones Las cartas se encuentran pintadas en ambos lados, donde se repiten los mismos símbolos aunque variando los colores e invirtiendo el sentido en el que deben leerse. Para la realización de este conjunto de cartas Xul empleó como soporte las cartulinas utilizadas por las galerías de arte para imprimir sus invitaciones. Algunos de los datos impresos son apenas visibles; sin embargo, para su datación hemos partido del análisis de esa información aun cuando si las tarjetas de invitación incluyen la fecha de apertura de la exposición no necesariamente indican el año de su realización. Para la reproducción de este conjunto en el catálogo, lo organizamos de la siguiente manera: en página 222 presentamos uno de sus lados y en la página 223, el otro. Aun cuando indicamos “anverso” y “reverso”, téngase en cuenta, que por lo mencionado previamente, no existe un lado que predomine sobre el otro. Notas Ignoramos si el juego de cartas de Tarot se encuentra finalizado, y la existencia de algunas cartas sueltas, como hemos indicado en el registro anterior, muestran variables en relación con el juego tal como llegó hasta nosotros. En el caso de la carta de la Muerte (o Muertie), según la tradición oral, esto es, la información transmitida por su viuda, Xul no la tiraba, pero esa misma tradición nada nos informa acerca del mecanismo del juego. Tampoco informa acerca de esa fusión entre algunas delas cartas que pertenecen al juego tradicional y aquellas otras en las que suma una nueva iconografía –directamente relacionada con el Zodíaco y cuya correspondencia uno encuentra en pinturas como, por ejemplo, Zodíaco (Cat. 944)– y en las cuales, la relación de todo el conjunto es construida por el empleo de los símbolos de los planetas, de los signos zodiacales y de una numeración de base duodecimal, además de letras que parecen identificar a cada carta. Notas Existen cuatro cajas contenedoras de lata con un total de 247 varillas de madera pintada al óleo que presentan, cada una de ellas, distintos motivos que las identifican y permiten reconocer los conjuntos. De de esos conjuntos, tanto por el simbolismo expresado en cada varilla como en términos estilísticos solo tres pueden ser pensados como completas mientras que el restante muestra tablillas sin acabar. El contenido de estas cajas está claramente relacionado con los tableros pero ignoramos cuál era su funcionamiento, esto es, cómo elegía las varillas que ingresaban en él, y cuál era el mecanismo de consulta del I Ching, en el que también estarían comprometidas las fichas movibles que aparecen delimitando las calles del tablero, como se ve en Cat. 1568. Observaciones En el Cuaderno de apuntes CA-42 aparecen varios dibujos de varillas, aunque no del Tablero de I Ching. Sin embargo, estos apuntes sirvieron para datar el objeto.
